“The Impala, of course, has all the things other cars have… and a few things they don’t. But none of that stuff’s important. This is the stuff that’s important. The army man that Sam crammed in the ashtray - it’s still stuck there. The Legos that Dean shoved into the vents — to this day, heat comes on and they can hear ‘em rattle. These are the things that make the car theirs — really theirs. Even when Dean rebuilt her from the ground up, he made sure all these little things stayed, ‘cause it’s the blemishes that make her beautiful.” - Chuck, Supernatural 5.22 ‘Swan Song’
Rufus Turner, Supernatural.
I can’t even begin to describe how much I loved Rufus as a character. A three-dimensional, powerful Jewish character of color whose religion isn’t played for cheap laughs? And on a show that’s generally dismissive of non-Christian religions (at best)? It couldn’t possibly be real.
But it was. Rufus fought monsters, drank scotch, dispensed advice, helped save the world, and didn’t take anyone’s bullshit—all while joking about Hanukkah and kashrut, and trying to avoid burying bodies on Shabbat. He was tough and cynical without ever being one-note, and quirky without ever being the stereotypical Jewish comic relief. And in the end, rather than giving him a quickie cremation like other hunters, Rufus’s friends and comrades went out of their way to bury him in a Jewish cemetery. Because that’s what he would have wanted.
Four for you, Rufus Turner.
